Chamber Duo Competition

The IDS Competition is open to a portable chamber duo of any combination and it includes two categories 1) Young Artist and 2) High School. Application deadline is February 1, 2020. Contestants agree to appear at the 2020 IDS at their own expense. Those who have been accepted to compete will be notified in mid-February, and must pre-register for the festival no later than March 1, 2020.
Young Artist Division (Sponsored by Chamber Music Montana)
Eligibility
  • The competition is open to any combination of two instruments including two like-instruments.
  • Each member must be age of between 18 and 30 on March 29, 2020.
  • Individuals may not compete in more than one duo.
Repertoire
  • Contestants must prepare up to 15 minutes of music to be performed live to a panel of judges during the 2020 IDS.
  • The repertoire must include any two of the 15 Two-Part Inventions, BWV 772-786, by J. S. Bach. Any rendition of the Inventions is acceptable including contestants’ own transcription.
  • Any original or transcribed works are accepted. Multi-movement works do not need to be presented in its entirety and individual movements may be selected for the performance.
  • Only acoustic compositions are acceptable, no electronics including pre-recorded audio track or live electronics should be used.
Prizes 
  • One prize of $500.00 will be awarded to the winning duo. The winning duo must be able to perform in the closing concert on March 29, 2020 at 3:00pm. Second/Alternate and honorable mentions may be given at the discretion of the judges.
  • All judges’ decisions are final, and not all prizes may be awarded in full to one winning duo.

High School Division 
Eligibility
  • The competition is open to any combinations of two portable instruments including two like-instruments.
  • Each member must be age of 18 or younger on March 29, 2020.
  • Individuals may not compete in more than one duo.
Repertoire
  • Contestants must prepare up to 10 minutes of music to be performed live to a panel of judges during the 2020 IDS.
  • Any original or transcribed works are acceptable. Multi-movement works do not need to be presented in its entirety and movements can be selected for the performance.
  • Only the acoustic compositions are acceptable, no electronics including pre-recorded audio track or live electronics should be used.
Prizes
  • One prize of $200.00 will be awarded to the winning duo. The winning duo must be able to perform in the closing concert on March 29, 2020 at 3:00pm.
  • Second/Alternate and honorable mentions may be given at the discretion of the judges. All judges’ decisions are final, and not all prizes may be awarded in full to one winning duo.

    Please include all of the information including Composition Title (Composition Date), Composer Name (Composer Dates), Arranger Name (if applicable), Movements, Instrumentation, and Duration of the Work.
