Ensemble Bio:
FL-AIR is a flute/clarinet duo based in Mobile, Alabama. Consisting of Travis Jones (flute) and Kip Franklin (clarinet), the duo has performed at the University of South Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Michigan State University, Art Reach of Mid-Michigan, and the University of Southern Mississippi. In 2017, the duo participated in the University of South Alabama’s eConcert series, which was performed in conjunction with performers in Dalian, China.
Kip Franklin is the Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the University of South Alabama. A native of Michigan, Dr. Franklin has performed in concerts with the Saginaw, Midland, Jackson, Dearborn, and Toledo symphonies, as well as in festivals throughout the United States and in Europe. He has presented and performed at the International Clarinet Association Conventions in Louisiana, Ohio, Alabama, Florida, and will be a featured performer at ClarinetFest 2018 in Ostend, Belgium. As a guest clinician, he has presented master classes at numerous high schools and universities across the country. His clarinet teachers include Caroline Hartig, Kennen White, Theodore Oien, and Guy Yehuda.
Travis Jones is the principal flutist of the Fifth Avenue Chamber Orchestra and the second flutist of the Mobile Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, he has played abroad and in the U.S. with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra and Lansing Symphony Orchestra. Travis was selected as the only American participant in the 2014 Nicolet International Flute Competition and was a finalist for the 2014 Coeur D’Alene Symphony Orchestra National Young Artist Competition. Currently, he is the instructor of Aural Skills at the University of South Alabama. Travis received his M.M. in Flute Performance from the University of Michigan with Amy Porter and his B.M. in Flute Performance from Michigan State University with Richard Sherman.
